In today’s blog, we’re turning our attention to a vital component of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision: the effective monitoring and tracking of pupil progress. A well-structured tracking system is key to ensuring that the support in place is truly benefiting pupils and helping them move forward. By consistently reviewing and interpreting progress data, educators can make timely, informed decisions about when to adapt or intensify interventions to better support individual needs.

Key areas to focus on this September

1. Evaluate your current tracking tools;

Start by taking a close look at the systems and tools your school uses to monitor the progress of pupils with SEND. Are they detailed and easy to use? Do they allow for tracking both academic achievements and wider developmental milestones? Reflect on how often this data is reviewed and whether it leads to meaningful action. This evaluation will help highlight any difficulties/ vulnerabilities and guide improvements to make your tracking more effective.

2. Carry out a progress review;

After assessing your systems, choose a focus group of SEND pupils and analyse their progress over the past term or academic year. Are they on course to meet their personalised targets? If not, delve into the possible reasons. Look at how progress differs across subjects or areas of need, and consider what changes might be necessary to better support these learners. This step is essential for gauging the impact of your current strategies and identifying areas for refinement.

3. Provide staff training on data interpretation;

Consider organising a training session for yourself or your team focused on using progress data effectively. This should include guidance on interpreting data for SEND pupils, using insights to tailor teaching approaches, and the importance of keeping data up to date. When all staff are confident in using this information, your school will be better equipped to provide responsive, targeted support that drives real progress.

Why this is important

For SENCos and school leaders, effective progress tracking is a powerful tool for driving meaningful change. It provides a clear picture of how well support strategies are working and where adjustments may be needed. With reliable data at your fingertips, you can make confident, evidence-based decisions that directly impact pupil outcomes. Regularly reviewing this information not only helps identify emerging needs early, but also supports strategic planning, resource allocation, and communication with staff and families. Most importantly, it ensures that every pupil with SEND is given the best possible chance to succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally.
